What To Expect At Your Dental Examination

If you are visiting either of our three dental offices for a regular dental check-up, you might be wondering what to expect and what we are looking for.

First of all, we would like to say that we are a no-judgment dental practice. We understand that some people might feel uncomfortable if they haven’t been to the dentist in a few years or even a few decades. Our only goal is to provide you with the dental treatment you need to ensure your oral health is in good standing. Our goal is not to make you feel bad for not coming in sooner. There’s nothing we can change about the past, so instead let’s look to the future about what steps we can take now to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

When you come in for an appointment, we may or may not take X-rays. This often depends on how long it has been since your last dental service and if you are experiencing any issues. For example, if you had X-rays taken at your last six-month appointment and you are not feeling any pain, we may not need to take X-rays. If, on the other hand, it has been several years since your last X-rays or your dentist is monitoring an ongoing problem, then X-rays might be necessary.

One of our friendly dental hygienists will perform your initial exam and cleaning. They will review your oral hygiene habits including brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. It is important to be honest with your hygienist so they can get a full picture of your oral health. They will perform a thorough cleaning to remove any plaque buildup on your teeth.

Then, your dentist will perform a comprehensive exam. They will go over your X-rays and any information that the dental hygienist has provided them with. They will also look for signs of oral cancer, gum disease, or other oral health concerns.

Early detection is vitally important when it comes to oral health, which is why we recommend that most patients visit us every six months. If your dentist finds any oral health issues, they may recommend coming in more frequently so they can adequately monitor the issue.
